The plan to “one day” renovate their scruffy and basic kitchen jumped to top priority when these east end homeowners discovered that a leaky faucet had been causing behind-the-scenes water damage to their cabinets and countertops.
Avid DIYers, they kept the budget reined in by investing their time (along with some blood, sweat and curses) into transforming the space. A mix of custom-built cabinetry and cleverly integrated Ikea components stacked storage and functionality into this small space without changing the floorplan. High end finishes, including natural Walnut and polished concrete, will stand the test of time alongside relatively cheap but chic features like the subway tile wall and the sunny hit of mustard yellow. The open shelves are home to an ever-evolving collection of kitchen essentials, original art, thrifted treasures and living greenery.
By keeping the original tile floors, upcycling an old butcherblock countertop on the salvaged center island, and choosing not to replace major appliances until absolutely necessary, this young family stayed true to their environmentally conscious values – waste not, want not!
